Activating and Using SQL Server 2019 Standard User CAL
SQL Server Client Access Licenses (CALs) allow users to legally access the SQL Server services and database features.
It is important to understand that CALs work differently from traditional software licenses and do not require product key activation.
- No technical activation required:
Unlike standard SQL Server installations, User CALs are not technically activated on the server.
You are legally required to own enough User CALs to license access for each individual user who connects to the SQL Server,
regardless of the device they use. - Administration of CALs:
There is no special tool or software required to activate or manage CALs.
It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that the organization has purchased sufficient CALs
to cover all users who access the server and to maintain purchase documentation as proof of compliance. - License Verification:
During a Microsoft license verification or audit, you may be asked to provide documentation or invoices showing proof of CAL purchases.
Keeping accurate records of your CALs helps demonstrate compliance with Microsoft licensing terms.
Note: SQL Server CALs are a licensing requirement, not a software component.
They work in conjunction with your SQL Server 2019 Standard installation to ensure legal usage across all users or devices accessing the server.
