Installation & Activation Instructions – Windows Server 2019 RDS Device CAL

Prerequisites

• Windows Server 2019 must be installed and activated.
• Remote Desktop Services (RDS) roles must be installed via Server Manager.
• Remote Desktop Licensing Manager must be enabled.
• You must be logged in as an Administrator.
• Your 25-character digital license key (sent via email) should be ready.

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Install the RDS Licensing Role:
   – Open Server Manager
   – Go to Manage → Add Roles and Features
   – Enable: Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Licensing
2. Open RD Licensing Manager:
   – Navigate to: Tools → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Licensing Manager
   – Or press Win + R, type licmgr.exe, and press Enter
3. Activate the License Server:
   – Right-click the server name → select Activate Server
   – Choose Automatic Connection and complete the wizard
   – Fill in company and contact details when prompted
4. Install RDS Device CALs:
   – Right-click the server → select Install Licenses
   – Choose license program: Retail Purchase
   – Enter your 25-character license key
   – Select license type: Windows Server 2019 RDS Device CAL
   – Complete the wizard to finish activation

Verifying Activation

• Return to RD Licensing Manager and check your installed CALs
• Confirm that your licensing mode is set to Per Device
• Ensure that client devices can now connect via RDP

Licensing Reminder

Each CAL is assigned to a specific device. CALs are automatically issued by the licensing server when a new device connects via Remote Desktop for the first time.
