Installation & Activation Instructions – Windows Server 2022 RDS User CAL

Prerequisites

• Windows Server 2022 must be installed and activated.
• The Remote Desktop Licensing role must be added via Server Manager.
• You must be logged in with Administrator rights.
• Have your 25-character license key (sent via email) ready.

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Install the RDS Licensing Role:
   – Open Server Manager
   – Go to Manage → Add Roles and Features
   – Select Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Licensing
2. Launch RD Licensing Manager:
   – Navigate to Tools → Remote Desktop Services → Remote Desktop Licensing Manager
   – Or press Win + R, type licmgr.exe, and hit Enter
3. Activate the License Server:
   – In the left panel, right-click your server → choose Activate Server
   – Use Automatic Connection method and complete the wizard
   – Provide organization details when prompted
4. Install User CALs:
   – Right-click your server → select Install Licenses
   – Choose License Program: Retail Purchase
   – Enter the 25-character key
   – Select license type: Windows Server 2022 RDS User CAL
   – Complete the wizard to finish the installation

Verify CAL Installation

• Open RD Licensing Manager and confirm your CALs are listed correctly
• Check that license mode is set to Per User

Licensing Note

User CALs are assigned to named individuals and are not tracked automatically by the server. Maintain a record of assigned users for compliance with Microsoft licensing terms.
